Radioactive camera lenses?

I have some vintage Zeiss Jena (pentacon 6 mount) lenses that I use with an adaptor on my Canon Rebel T1i. I have recently read however that some of these lenses can be radioactive? Should I be concerned for my health? They’re the “zebra” kind – with the alternating metal and black.

The radioactivity level on these lenses is very very low. It is considered to be well into the safe range. Nobody as far as I know as ever become sick from using one of the many radioactive lenses of the era.
The radioactivity come from thorium that was used in making in the glass. It does two thing which are interesting. The first is that it will sometimes turn the glass part of the lens yellow. This is easily reversed. The radioactivity also does something to the light entering it so it has a different effect. In general those are very high quality lenses. Enjoy using them.
