Has anyone ever used the cheaper strobe-lighting kits with the umbrellas on ebay?

I’ve worked in a studio with nice strobe lighting with soft-boxes. I am just curious how these compare. I really can’t afford the white-lighting type lights with the softboxes right now, but I don’t want to end up getting somemthing like the above link and realize that I totally hate it and can’t work with it. I would prefer strobe if possible so I could go without a tripod and be able to shoot kids without having to worry about them moving around too much. Is this a good beginning light kit? Or should I wait, save my money and buy what I know works. Thanks!
Did you check the specs on that package ? 40 watt secs ??? GN 26 ft (less than the pop up on my prosumer Nikon) …no specified recycle time, you could buy a couple of speedlights and a remote trigger for less. Sorry, but that looks like junk to me and I’d hate to see you wasting money.
Buyer beware, there is a reason quality studio set ups cost big money…
