Camcorder Help Please?
Hi everyone, I know nothing about camcorders and I really want to shoot a short film, something with a really good image stabilizer and good audio so you can hear the actors very well, the film will have a lot of closeups so it really needs to have a clear picture and yes I will use a tripod. If there is anyone who can help please do because I’m really not sure about this. Nothing fancy just good enough for what is mentioned above. Thank you for reading.
Even with your stated requirements, you didn’t state how much you budgeted so you may get suggestions ranging from simple pocket camcorders to professional cams. A few things to consider though. Is your computer capable of handling video and will your video editing program support whatever format the camera records in? HD video for example is very compressed and requires a computer system that can handle it (make sure you meet or better yet exceed the minimum requirements stated for the editor program). Stay away from hard disk drive (HDD) and miniDVD cams. They use a drive which is susceptible to failure should the cam be dropped or abruptly jolted thus you would loose all your video. Stick to flash based (duo-flash) or miniDV tapes. You can change the media as you work on projects (edit later, etc.) Besides recording in HD, many consumer cams record HD as 720p which is fine for YouTube posts, DVDs, etc. But you may want a cam that records in full HD (1080). Prosumer cams don’t record audio very well. Plan on using an good quality external microphone with the cam or ideally use a separate audio recorder, like a Zoom H1n or TASCAM DR-100 (Zoom H1 is cheaper and works well). Image stabilizers are okay but try not to have to use it all the time. Guerrilla shots are fine for some scenes but a static or tripod support is much best otherwise.
Since I don’t know what you can spend, a decent cam with your requirements and my suggestions would be something like a Canon HV40.
