Which finder scope should I choose for my Orion Skyquest Dobsonian 6″?
I received this telescope a few days ago. My stock EZ finder fell into my pool, so I need a replacement. I was considering buying a new one, but then I read a lot of good reviews about Telrad finders. Is a Telrad finder a better choice (if so, which type should I get), and would it fit on my Orion Skyquest Dobsonian 6″?
I use a Telrad finder in connection with a 9×50 finder scope . I use the Telrad to get me in the right region of the sky, then I use the finder – because I can usually actually see and center the object in the finder before going to the eyepiece. I like to use them both together, and I would have a tough without one or the other.
The Telrad is a nice tool. You can set up star hopping charts with the Telrad circles superimposed, which will give you a really good idea of exactly where to start looking. It can be a little tricky, depending on where you place your eye while looking through it. But you will get used to using it.
A Telrad comes with a plastic mounting bracket, which will have to be mounted to your tube. this is not a big deal, but you may want to keep in mind what it will do to the axial balance of your scope. Once the bracket is installed, the Telrad can be easily installed and removed for storage without significantly affecting its alignment.
