What To Look For When Buying A Telescope

As a child, we usually had fun staring up at the stars in the night sky. Perhaps we would try to locate some of the popular constellations, such as Orion, the Little Dipper, and Ursa Minor and Major. Since this time, while we may not have indulged in this interest as time has passed, the desire to get to know the stars and the planets has not dissipated. Buying a telescope will not only help you get better acquainted with the moon, the stars, and planets.

But to get the most out of your viewing, it’s important to buy a telescope that is quality and suits your needs. The following are just a few considerations.

Durability

Obviously, you want whichever telescope you buy to last for a long time so you don’t have to go back and continually buy another one. Telescopes are investments, and depending on your budget it could be a rather significant one. The most reputable brands generally provide durability, so buying a telescope from a leading brand is a good way to get one that is durable. Also, reading customer reviews will give you insight on durability.

Features

When cell phones first came out, they were analog and eventually became digital. As time passed, the cell phones were more compact, came in various colors, and more features were added such as the video camera and applications.

As far as telescopes are concerned, features may or may not be as important to you. But some do have more features than others, so you will have to decide what you want out of your telescope. Do you want a telescope that is simple and basic, or one that has all kinds of features designed to enhance your viewing experience?

For example, the Meade ETX-80AT-TC Astro Telescope comes with several features, including AutoStar. This is a computer controller that can locate more than 1400 objects in the sky, including planets, stars, nebulae, and so on. This feature may be desirable for beginners, but not necessarily so much for advanced users. Nonetheless, this is a consideration.

How far away do you want to view? The size of the aperture will dictate how much you can view, some will only allow you to view the solar system only. For most people however, this may be enough.

Overall, buying a telescope isn’t something that should be taken lightly. Various models and brands are available, and what you decide to get will impact your viewing one way or another.

Boomerang Nebula Photo Mugs

Boomerang Nebula Photo Mugs

Boomerang Nebula, Hubble Space Telescope image. This is a bipolar reflection nebula, where gas and dust surrounding a star are shining by reflected light. The gas and dust in the nebula have been ejected by the star in two polar jets, moving in opposite directions, a process known as bipolar outflow. It is thought that the star at the centre of this nebula is an old red giant star. The nebula is a…

Cartwheel galaxy, multi-wavelength image Photo Mugs

Cartwheel galaxy, multi-wavelength image. Around 100 million years ago, a smaller galaxy passed directly through the centre of the Cartwheel galaxy. This caused shock waves to propagate out through the galaxy, which caused bursts of star formation. The bright blue ring marks the region where huge, powerful ultraviolet-emitting stars have formed. The inner orange ring is the second wave, but this h…

Cats Eye nebula Photo Mugs

Cats Eye nebula. Hubble Space Telescope image of the Cats Eye nebula (NGC 6543). This is a planetary nebula, shells of gas cast off by a dying star, whose light illuminates them. The star is seen at the centre of the nebula. The name is misleading, as planetary nebulae have nothing to do with planets. The structure of the gas shells is extremely intricate, and reveals much about the star and its s…
