Are monopods universal fit?

The 679 has both 3/8×15 and 1/4×20 studs, so yes it will work. The camera has a 1/4×20 thread. The 3/8×15 will push down (spring loaded) to allow the camera to mount directly onto the monopod. If you get a monopod head or tripod head for the monopod, it will use the 3/8×15 mount.
You are good either way.
