Reflector Telescope

What do you reccomend in a 6-8 inch reflector telescope?
We are looking for a portable telescope with high quality optics.
Go for the 8″ size. It’ll give you clearer views. Here’s to examples -
This one gives your the best overall performance for the money. Very simple and durable.

This one is the same size, but it is called a “push-to” telescope, since it has a computerized system that allows you find objects -

The reason why I’m showing you these two is to illustrate a basic factor that you need to decide on how you want to pursue your hobby; “Are you in it for the hunt, or the kill?”
The first scope is for hunting. You’ll need to devote the time to learn the sky and to find objects that are not readily visible to the unaided eye.
The second scope is the other type, where you may not have the time to devote to learning your way around the sky directly, This system will shorten the time you take to find stuff, at the expense of learning the sky better.
Nothing wrong with going either way, just you need to be aware of the two different learning curves.
Now, on top of getting a telescope, I would highly recommend getting this book to get started with -

The last item is to join an astronomy club. If there is one in your area. A good club will help shorten the learning curve that goes with the hobby, allows you to try out other peoples equipment, to see what works best for you and provides comradery with like mind folks.

7ft Newtonian (reflector) telescope Photo Mugs William Herschel made and sold many telescopes of this type. He used his own 7ft telescope (which would have been very similar to this one) with a 6.2 inch aperture magnifying images 227 times (depending on the eyepiece used), to make his second review of the heavens in 1781 from his house in New Kings Street, Bath. It was during this review that he discovered the planet Uranus. Herschel was able … |
