Power Binoculars
Is it common for stargazers to use binoculars to watch the stars?
i heard that some people actually watch comets with high-powered binoculars (not telescopes). i was wondering because i have never heard about this before and i was wondering because my friend really loves the stars and i’m not sure i could afford a telescope for her so i thought maybe binoculars might be a cheaper option..
It’s all to do with what you want to do, and how much you depend on having a wide field of view.
Binoculars have that wide field of view, maybe 7 degrees as opposed to half a degree of less for a telescope. So, if you are scanning the sky for something, binoculars are your thing.
Until recent years where comets are discovered by advanced photographics, amateurs discovered comets using large binoculars.
Also, looking at star fields is fantastic with wide-field binoculars on a dark night in a dark place. Stars are not more than points of light even in the biggest telescopes, so magnification is soemwhat irrelevant, though powerful telescopes will show very close double stars where your 12 mag binoculars may not.
But one thing I tell newbies to astronomy, is if you want to learn the sky, use naked eye and binoculars for a year, before jumping in and spending money on a telescope.
