Monopod setup : help needed?

Hey guys, i am considering to buy one of those 70-200 f2.8 lenses, either Tamron or Sigma or Canon (no stabilization; too expensive :p)

Now without IS or OS or VC, shoooting hand-held at 200mm can be quite hard, esp towards the evening. So to help provide stability, i have been recommended to buy monopod, as i dont have a tripod at the moment and i personally feel that a tripod is too bulky to carry around whole day.

So back to monopods, I have a question. The monopod that seems good to me are :
Manfrotto Compact Monopod 680B & Manfrotto Professional Monopod 681B.

Now if i buy the Manfrotto 678 MONOPOD Universal Folding Base and use with one of above monopods, will it provide stability as good as a tripod? Say, can i mount the camera and lens on the monopod without me touching it / can the monopod stand on itself with the 70-200 2.8 lens mounted on it?

Thanks for your help.

You can’t substitute a monopod for a tripod. Even lower-end tripods with braces and legs much thicker than the 678′s tremble in low winds or under heavy loads; imagine the same scenario with the unbalanced setup that you describe. It’ll probably stand on it’s own, but it probably won’t be very stable outside of a controlled environment. If you’re going to be standing in one spot for a while, it’ll probably be more convenient for you to have a head on it which may further add to the setup’s instability.

Monopods are good in situations where you could benefit from an extra stop or two. They’re lighter than tripods which means they’re more likely to be used, but they can’t do what a decent tripod can.

The adequacy of a monopod depends on what, where, when and how you shoot.
