Will My Tripod Support a Crane?
I have a Manfrotto/Bogen 055XB tripod that says it supports up to about 15lbs. The crane I’m looking into getting is the Glidecam Camcrane 200 which says it has a payload of up to 30lbs. depending on the height. What would happen if I were to use this crane with my tripod?

The Bogen / Manfrotto 055XB tripod is rated to carry 15.4 pounds. Just the crane weighs more than the tripod is rated for. Add a camera to that and the cables and the counterweights and you are setting up for catastrophic failure of the tripod.
Please let me know where you will be so I can capture the video of your camera crashing to the ground.
Because you overloaded the tripod, there will be no warranty coverage for anything. Yes, they can tell.

I realized I had not provided an alternative… the crane specs also specify “Camcrane 200 mounts on the 3/8″ standard bolt found on the majority of medium and heavy duty tripods” and that B/M you listed is a consumer (light duty) tripod.
The Kessler “K-Pod” tripod system is a good one. So is their crane.
ProAm (sold through Bargain-camera) has a turn-key kit – apparently it uses a “medium duty” tripod like those used for PA speaker or DJ light trees. GuitarCenter or MusiciansFriend has them. The key will be the mounting mechanism.
Remember, you will also need a monitor (I use a Sony portable 8.5 inch DVD player with AV-in – it has a 5 hour battery life when playing DVDs – longer when in monitor mode only). And a long RCA AV cable to connect the camcorder to the monitor.
You will also need a LANC. Since you did not tell us what camcorder you are using, we can’t know if it has a LANC port… and if so, a long LANC extension.
And as an option, you might want a motorized tilt/pan device… I have found they can be cheap (~$130) or REALLY expensive ($1,200), but not much to choose from in between.
