help with some thoughts on a lab?
We used a crucible with a ribbon of magnesium in it and placed the lid off centre to allow air to enter but to prevent the magnesium oxide from escaping. Then we placed the crucible above a bunson burner with a gentle flame. The magnesium soon turns to white powder before we started adding 10 ml of water to the powder then heating it up one last time. how does the chemical reaction occur with the magnesium and why.
any help pertaining to this would be extremely helpful.
The primary reactions are:
2Mg (s) + O2 (g) —–> 2MgO (s)
MgO (s) + H2O (l) —–> Mg(OH)2 (s) Note: Mg(OH)2 is only very slightly soluble.
Mg(OH)2 (s) + heat —–> MgO (s) + H2O (g)
