Why does my Sony Lens for my A350 have macro on it yet it doesnt focus when trying to take close up images?
i have a Sony Lens 18-70mm which has macro written on it. Whenever i try to take a close up image, the camera will NOT focus at all!
I’ve looked on the internet for what specs a macro lens should be which seemed to confuse me even more. The internet said that a macro lens should be 90-105mm or 150-200 for a close up image.
This conflicts with the fact that i have a zoom lens which is 55-200mm.. surely this covers the spectrum the internet has described as a macro lens?!
Basically i would like to understand what lens i should be looking for and perhaps why the mm’s dont seem to make any sense!!
The 18-70 is not really a macro. The minimum focusing distance is 15″ and the magnification is 1:4 so it may be within acceptable limits to be called a macro, but it is not a true macro.
If you are closer than 15″ to your subject the lens will not focus. It will try but it won’t be able to. You will have to move back.

I don’t know where you found that info, but I have never seen anything like that. The proper focal length for a macro is dependent upon what you are shooting. For flowers and other things that won’t take flight if you get too close, a 50mm or 60mm macro will work great. It is less expensive and offers magnification of 1:1-true macro. If you want to shoot insects that would fly away then a longer telephoto would be better. But the focal length does not determine how good a macro lens is.
To be described as a macro, a lens generally has at least 1:4 magnification. Most zoom macros fall between 1:3 and 1:4. A few of the more expensive zoom macros have 1:2 magnification. Only a prime lens-one focal length-not a zoom-is a true macro with 1:1 magnification.
