What Is the Best Flashlight for Survival? Part 1
One of the things most high on any list of things for a survival kit should be a flashlight. Most specifically a hand crank flashlight that does not rely on batteries to keep you in the light. There are many flashlights. They come in virtually every size and color and description. What is your preference? What is the best emergency flashlight?
It all depends on your and your needs.
For what will the flashlight be used?
- Is it going into your vehicle emergency kit
- located within our home in various rooms
- backpack
- camping
- escape
- key chain for lock
- You get the drift here no doubt.
- Will you need to see far or close?
- Will you be needing it in a boat where waterproofing may be of importance?
- Do you need to conceal it?
- Will bulbs be a problem or batteries?
- And a major feature might be cost.
- Will you be using it on a firearm?
What is your lifestyle that will merit what you will use your emergency flashlight for?
In all probability you will need and should without question have many flashlights and for every conceivable use you can imagine.
All light used by man is measured in Lumen or Candlepower. Is brighter always better? Is bigger better? Is run time important, i.e, battery longevity? If so LED vs. incandescent would be major consideration. Is keeping your location concealed important. Do you know you can see a cigarette glow for massive distances? What do you think of a flashlight beam? What of your night vision. Having a subdued red led flashlight will preserve your night vision and be virtually invisible unless you point the beam straight at someone.
If brightness is a concern, and it most certainly should be, consider that low lumen is very dim on the object the flashlight is pointed at and high lumen is very bright or at least brighter. One hundred watt bulb is equal to about twelve hundred lumen.
If you only need a light for close up work, like changing a tire, reading a map one with low lumen and long time batter life would be adequate. On the other hand if you needing to see at a distance such as in search and rescue you will want and need a flashlight with some serious candlepower. Something up in the millions of candlepower. One such example would be the Humvee HMV 40MIL 110. It is one of the brightest flashlights on the market.
There may be some special use flashlights like a headlamp flashlight for use when you need both hands. That could be when working in the dark, DUH!. Coon hunters find them very handy as do farmers or ranchers when doing chores. They are nice when milking and the lights go out, if you milk by hand. Or changing that flat tire or the broken fan belt.
For top quality the Surefire LX2 LumaMax gets a 5 Star rating as the best survival tactical flashlight. Another top pick is the Fenix TK40. It is a bit larger and brighter than the LumaMax, but is jam packed with high quality features. This is my recommendation.
