Gorillapod Tripod

What kind of tripod is better for traveling and everyday use?
My family and I are going on vacation, and I plan on taking many pictures. Right now I have a regular tripod. It’s very bulky, and a pain to carry around, though. Would a pocket tripod, tripod, gorillapod, or monopod be best? And how big can pocket tripods get…? Same with gorillapods and monopods. I have so confused by all of the -pods! Haha..
* I am very serious about it. I plan to take many scenery shots.
* I plan to take macro, and sweeping landscape pictures. We are going to see the Niagra Falls and Pensylvania. My mom will be taking the family pictures. I prefer udjustable legs.
* My camera is a Cannon SX120. I am 5’2″.
* For the Niagra Falls, it will be on foot. For the most parts, I’ll be hauling it around in the car, but when I do carry it, it’s as big as a folding chair.
* As cheap as I can. My mom doesn’t really want to get me one, but if it’s cheap, she’ll probably say yes.
The type of tripod to get and/or bring depends in equal (or unequal) parts on:
* How serious you are about photography and what you plan to use the images for
* The types of photos you plan to take (A monopod will provide some support but will not be stable if your shot requires the camera can’t move…. Also, be sure to hold onto your camera on a monopod – don’t let it fall off)
* The size/type of camera you plan to use (compact, sub-compact, DSLR, view camera, etc.) & your height
* Whether you’ll be hauling the gear around on foot or in the trunk of a car for short setups/take-downs
* How much you’re willing to spend ($25 – over $1,000 + extra for the head).
If you can fill us in re: those things we can help answer your question…. Okay, cool, thx – those answers help! Here you go:
1- I’d suggest you go with the following two options for what you plan to shoot and your budget (you could probabably stay under or just over $100 with the two depending on models/brands you choose – for a compact camera’s support, don’t spend a lot…). Get both:
A: The Gorillapod Original – it will support the weight of your compact camera just fine. But if you want to boost up to the next price point in their line and get the SLR version (not SLR pro) you can get a tripod that has a liquid level on it. Gorillapods are a great tripod option for use on walls or pressed against trees as a brace. But you’ll need some sort of surface to put the Gorillapod on. I just wrap the Gorillapod legs around my camera bag and it’s easy to carry along everywhere when I’m using my compact camera (vs. my DSLR). They’re cheap and lightwt. nothing lost by taking it along!
B: For your 2nd option I’d suggest you do go for a monopod rather than another tripod – given what you’re planning to shoot. You can pan with it to get your multiple shots that can be stitched into a pano or you can lower and angle it to take macro shots of flowers/plants/nature that are closer to the ground – and it will adapt to your height (with tripods you’ll want to be sure you’d get one that isn’t too tall for you). Manfrotto is quite a good make to consider (for monopods as well as tripods…), as is Induro (which are usually less expensive). ProMaster (like their 1700 model) is significantly less expensive than either of those two. All three makes tend to be lightwt. And monopods can be used like walking sticks.
Have a wonderful trip!
