What are yellow filters for on binoculars?
I inherited some binoculars from my grandad. They came with some yellow glass filters that fit on to the end of the binoculars. As they don’t fit inside the binoculars’ carry case, I am assuming that he bought them separately.
So what are these yellow filters for? How do they help?
Human eyes are most sensitive to light in the yellow range.
They are also more sensitive to shades of light in that range.
The yellow filters take out the colors that the eyes don’t discern as well at low light levels so that they open up and get more of the yellow.
FYI: The gray scale cells in the eyes are even better in low light but are primarily around the edges and very sensitive to motion. If you are watching for meteors, watch slightly to the side of the area you expect them in and then shift your focus when you see the flash along the edge.
