which would i buy for my nikon d40? an extension tube or close up filter/lens?
if we use either of this, is it true that it is more or less the same with the 55mm micro f2.8 lens?
It depends on your budget and just how close you want to be to the subject.
Extension tubes will take you in to 1:1 (life size) and you’ll need to increase the camera exposure in proportion to the amount of extension used.
Close up lenses will take you to about 1:3 (third life size) and do not require changes in camera exposure.
While both those options are cheaper than buying a dedicated Macro lens, you’ll need to stop down to at least f8 to get reasonably sharp results.
