What can I see through a cheap telescope?

I have a cheap carson telescope like the one in the link above and I was wondering, what can I be able to see through a simple telescope like this? I just dug it up from my room to try it out after years of neglect, and I’ve been looking at the moon, but is there anything else I can look at? Mars, planets, stars, etc. Where to look for these? It’s a very simple refracting telescope, and a bit difficult to focus. Any tips are appreciated.
holy crap great answers guys!!
There are lots of things that you can see – you just will not be able to see them very well. Some examples:
1. The Moon is probably your best target. You should see lots of detail.
2. Saturn – you should be able to make out the rings, and perhaps one moon (Titan)
3. Jupiter – You will see a bright round circle and the 4 Galilean moons
4. Other planets – You can see Venus, Mars, Mercury, and Uranus, – Neptune maybe. You will see no detail.
5. Star clusters – you should be able to see some of the large open clusters like M11 and the Double Cluster. They may look like dim, fuzzy, puffballs. I doubt that you will be able to see any globular clusters – maybe M13 if you’re lucky.
6. Nebulae – you should be able to make out the brighter nebulae, like M8 and M42.
7. Star clouds – the summer Milky Way will look nice
8. Galaxies – the only galaxy that you will be able to see is M31 (Andromeda).
As mentioned previously, all of these objects are probably easier and more enjoyable to observe using a decent binocular. Most of them can be seen with the naked eye, if you know where to look. For that, I would recommend the book “Nightwatch” by Terence Dickinson, and also the free download software at stellarium.org.
Good Luck.
