Should You Buy a DSLR or a Point and Shoot?

In recent times, cameras have become increasingly important in our daily lives. Photography is one of the most common hobbies around, and people seem obsessed with the art of taking perfect snapshots. If you are going to buy a digital camera, it is best you first decide whether you would want a point and shoot camera or a DSLR camera. Below I have listed several advantages and disadvantages of both types.

Point and Shoot Cameras

What they are: Point and shoot cameras are basically cameras that are usually automated to make it easier for the user to take photographs without meddling with the settings.

Best used for: Casual photography, without the need to enlarge the images too much or for images you would like to upload onto social networking sites.

Advantages: They are cheaper, lighter and smaller in size. Recent point and shoot camera models are also quieter than DSLRs. Besides that, these cameras have a LCD framing feature which means you won’t have to look into a tiny optical viewer to frame your snapshots. The auto mode of point and shoot cameras are very convenient for those not so technically inclined. Point and shoot cameras also usually have lots of additional fun features like automatic smile detection and so on.

Disadvantages:  Point and shoot cameras usually cannot match up to the image quality that DSLRs produce, as their image sensors are not as advanced. However for the average user, this image quality is more than enough to satisfy. Point and shoot cameras also don’t have many manual overrides, so everything is up to the camera on how the image turns out. For professional or avid photographers, this is not a good feature as it takes the art out of photography.

DSLR (Digital Single Lens Reflex) Camera

What they are: Cameras that have removable lenses and a reflex mirror that enables you to engage in live optical viewing through the lens taking the snapshot. In simple terms, cameras that have many manually changeable features and need some technical knowledge to operate.

Best used for: Serious and professional photography, where the user want to be able to control the functions of the camera as well as how the image turns out.

Advantages: The quality of images produced by DSLRs is top notch, even when zoomed in many times (not something you will see in point and shoot cameras generally). They are very adaptable and allow you to change many settings to get the picture just right. Simply put, they give you lots of control and better quality images.

Disadvantages: These heavy and large cameras can be a pain to lug around if you are not a passionate photographer. They are also much more expensive than point and shoot cameras. The complexity of operating a DSLR and the maintenance involved in owning one may not appeal to casual users. DSLRs are also noisier.

Verdict

Deciding on which type of digital camera to buy comes down to whether you are a casual photographer, or an avid one. If you are a casual photographer who does not want to bother with learning the technical stuff associated with DSLRs, getting yourself a point and shoot would be the better option. If you are a professional or someone serious in photography and will spend lots of time using your camera, DSLRs are the way to go.  Hope you buy the perfect camera for your needs!
